French Study: Baldness at Age 20 Puts Men at a Greater Risk of Prostate Cancer

A new French study shows that men who started going bald at age 20 have a greater risk of developing prostate cancer than those who started losing their hair at a later age.

The study was published in the journal Annals of Oncology. It was based on interviews and observations of 388 men with prostate cancer and 281 healthy men.

The male hormone androgen has been linked to both male pattern baldness and the growth of prostate cancer — the second most common form of cancer in men worldwide.

Doctors say screening all men for the disease may be useless because of false positives and the harmful side effects of ultimately unnecessary treatment.

They say the latest study of men balding at 20 can help them identify who may be at high risk of prostate cancer.
