US Lottery Has One $319 Million Winner
VOA - Saturday, March 26th, 2011
A lottery ticket worth $319 million has been sold in the United States, the biggest jackpot ever for a single winning ticket.
New York lottery officials said Saturday that the winning ticket was sold the day before at a variety store in the state capital of Albany. It was not immediately known who the winner is.
In the U.S., as various lottery jackpots increase, millions of people buy tickets in hopes of getting rich overnight. Many buyers pool their resources to purchase multiple tickets with friends, relatives or co-workers, and if they are lucky, would split the winnings.
Often times, multiple winning tickets are sold. But that was not the case with Friday's Mega Millions drawing. Only one ticket was sold with the winning numbers: 22, 24, 31, 52 and 54, with 4 as Mega ball number.
The winner will have the option of collecting the $319 million in installments over 25 years, or one immediate payment of nearly $203 million.
