Thousands Lose Homes in Philippines Slum Fire
Tuesday, February 15th, 2011 - VOA
Thousands of people are homeless in the Philippines after a fire swept through their shantytown in a Manila suburb.
Officials said Tuesday the blaze leapt from home to home, destroying about 500 buildings in the Bahay Toro slum before it was contained around 3 a.m. Tuesday. Each of the homes provided shelter for an extended family.
Authorities said a 5-year-old child was trapped in his home and died in the blaze. Six others were injured.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
