1,000 Dead Birds Fall on Arkansas Town

Sunday, January 2nd, 2011

Researchers are expected Monday to begin testing a group of dead birds that fell on a small U.S. town shortly before midnight on New Year's Eve.
Investigators recovered some of the bodies of about 1,000 blackbirds that dropped from the sky onto a one-kilometer-wide area in the community of Beebe, in the southern state of Arkansas Friday.
Experts say the birds could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail. They also say New Year's Eve fireworks could have startled the birds and somehow caused their deaths.
The tests are expected to provide some answers.
