Last US WWI Veteran Dies at 110
Monday, February 28th, 2011 - VOA
The last surviving U.S. veteran of World War One has died at the age of 110.
A family spokesman said Frank Buckles died Sunday at his home in the state of West Virginia.
Buckles signed up for the Army when he was 16 years old, after lying to recruiters to convince them he was older.
He served in the war as an ambulance driver in France. He also helped return prisoners of war to Germany after Armistice Day.
Buckles was a prisoner of war in the Philippines during World War Two.
Late in his life he advocated for a national monument in the U.S. dedicated to honoring all Americans who fought and died in World War One.
