Small Business Saturday
Obama Shopping Supports Small Business
November 26, 2011 - VOA
U.S. President Barack Obama marked “small business Saturday” by taking his daughters shopping at a bookstore a few blocks from the White House.
The president said he and first daughters, Sasha and Malia, were getting an early start to Christmas shopping and supporting a local business.
Among the president's purchases were The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever by Jeff Kinney and Descent into Chaos: The U.S. and the Disaster in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Central Asia by Ahmed Rashid.
The retail industry designated Saturday as the day shoppers can support small, independently owned businesses during the busy pre-Christmas shopping season. It is a counterpoint to Black Friday and the sales offered by chain department stores and other large retailers.

Made in America - store stocks goods made exclusively in the USA
US Tourists Shop for Their Country
'Made in America' store stocks goods made exclusively in the USA
Daniel Robison | Elma, New York
June 29, 2011
Photo: VOA - D. Robison The Made in America store tries to ensure every product is 100 percent American-made, right down to the glue in the packaging. |
Owner Mark Andol climbs aboard a bus of retirees to tell them shopping here is a patriotic act.
“When you walk through them doors, I guarantee, when you’re shopping the homework’s been done. It’s 100 percent made-in-America products. Made in this country by American workers and the money stays in our economy. So enjoy yourself. Thank you.”
Customers pour into the spacious building, which used to house a car dealership. American flags and patriotic quotes adorn the walls. The store even has a theme song which includes the lyric; "Made in America, the red white and blue.”
Gloria Giesa says she always looks for “Made in the USA” labels when shopping. But she doesn’t have to in this store. “Makes me think of when I was young and everything was American. And that’s the way it should be.”
But the Vaselboro, Maine woman admits she doesn’t always buy American products. “You buy the best deal you can find. That’s what it’s all about. Some people, every penny counts. And if you can save 50 cents, that’s a lot.”
Andol sees his store as a way for American vendors to gain traction in a retail environment where they’ve been priced out by overseas competition. This is personal for him. A few years ago, his welding company nearly went out of business after losing major contracts to foreign manufacturers. He laid off nearly half of his 70 workers.
“These people want to work. You have no work for them," says Andol. "And it’s going overseas and you think, ‘Jeez, these people want to put food on their table. They’re willing to work.’ There just wasn’t enough work for me to keep them.”
VOA - D. RobisonTourists stop by the Made in America store in Elma, New York. |
At first, Andol admits the store was more of an idea than a business plan. In fact, when it opened 14 months ago, he stocked just 50 items.
Now, customers can browse through a variety of more than 3,000 products. There are some obvious absences. There are no can openers, coffee makers or just about anything electronic. But prices on what is on the shelves are competitive: jeans for $30 dollars; $14 will buy a t-shirt that says, “China is a long drive to work.”
It is manager Rob Weylan’s job to make sure each product is 100 percent American-made, right down to the glue in the packaging. The store requires its vendors to say where every component of their product is made and sign letters of authenticity.
It's necessary, Weylan says, because loopholes in federal rules allow many items to be labeled “Made the USA” even if they include some foreign-made elements. He spends hours verifying manufacturers’ claims.
“If, for some reason, something were to slip through the cracks, we take the product out of the store, burn it or whatever we do with it because they lied to us.”
So far, patriotic principle isn't turning a profit. Any money the store makes goes right back into acquiring new products. But sales have doubled from this time last year, thanks to word of mouth and visits by out-of-town tourists.
As one group files back onto the bus, Andol hands out small flags and flyers advertising the store’s website.
Franchisees are already planning to open more Made in America stores, envisioning it as possibly the next Wal-Mart - only without the foreign-made goods.
VOA - D. RobisonMade in America stocks 3,000 American-made products - and almost no electronics. |

EAT LOCAL—SAVE THE BAY
Chesapeake Bay Foundation - We're happy to introduce the new "Buy Fresh Buy Local Chesapeake" website! Find out what local foods and the Chesapeake Bay have in common, as well as where to buy local foods, how to get involved, and more.
ABOUT BUY FRESH BUY LOCAL CHESAPEAKE
Why Buy Fresh and Local?
- Fresh food and produce is healthier and more nutritious (and delicious!)
- More of your food dollars stay in the community to support local farmers and build local economies.
- When local farmers farm sustainably, they preserve open space, keep their lands productive, and protect their land from urban and suburban development, which harms the Chesapeake Bay.
Buy Fresh Buy Local Chesapeake is one of nearly 80 chapters throughout the country (and currently the only one in Maryland), working to promote locally grown food to the public, connect consumers to local food producers, and change local food priorities. The Buy Fresh Buy Local brand, under the auspices of the Food Routes Network, is nationally recognized.
The Chesapeake chapter began in 2006 with a group of dedicated individuals who had farming, restaurant, and food policy backgrounds. Since May 2010, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has been the coordinating organization for the chapter, providing staff and organizational support.
For over 25 years, CBF has been making the connection between local sustainable agriculture and the Chesapeake Bay's water quality by:
- advocating for policies and legislation that benefit farmers and the Bay.
- educating students, teachers, and the public about sustainable agriculture.
- putting conservation into practice at CBF's Clagett Farm with its CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), grass-fed beef, native tree nursery, and education center.
What's Next?
We're just getting started. In the future, check this website for:
- an online food guide with lists of farmers, producers, farmers markets, and more resources.
- outreach events at fairs and festivals to educate consumers and promote sustainable agriculture and healthy local food.
- invitations to special events, such as a Graze Fest at CBF's Clagett Farm, highlighting grass-fed beef and local produce or an Oyster Fest featuring aquaculture oysters.

Convenience Stores - Healthier Food Options
Corner Stores Take a Healthy Turn
New initiative helps urban shops stock fruits, vegetables and dairy
Matthew Petrillo | Philadelphia, Pennsylvania January 26, 2011
Photo: VOA - M. Petrillo
Oliviarie’s Food Market is one of 440 corner stores in Philadelphia that has signed up for a program to offer healthier options - including fruits and vegetables - to its customers.
There are more than 89,000 corner stores in the United States. Most are small, locally-owned shops, and in poorer city neighborhoods, they might be the only general store for blocks around. But the stores rarely carry fresh, healthy foods.
A new initiative in Philadelphia is out to change that. The Food Trust, a nonprofit, is trying to make access to healthier foods easier and profitable.
High cost of junk food
Oliviarie’s Food Market is one of 440 corner stores in Philadelphia that has signed up for the program. The store acts as a kind of central hub for the surrounding neighborhoods, and often draws young people who end up purchasing high-calorie snacks.
"We usually have chips and juice, candy," says Anita Davis, an eighth grader.
"Soda and some gum," adds Shatera Della, her friend and schoolmate.
The girls attend Barratt Norris Middle School which is just a few blocks away from Oliviarie’s. They come here almost every day after school, and they’re not alone. More than a quarter of Philadelphia students visit corner stores twice a day, five days a week, according to a new study. "Snacking in Children: the Role of Urban Corner Stores," was published by the Temple University Center for Obesity Research and Education.
"In my opinion I think it’s really interesting that a child can spend a dollar and get 350 calories on average at any one trip to a corner store," says Stephanie Vander Veur, a clinical researcher at Temple. "It’s pretty amazing, if you ask me."
VOA - M. Petrillo
The Healthy Corner Store Initiative even offers refrigerators to stores that agree to join the program.Clara Santos, owner of Oliviarie’s Food Market, sees the same children twice a day. "When they’re going to school, and on their way back, they stop by the store."
Santos points to the bags of chips and soda bottles — the most popular items they purchase — all for under a dollar.
There are about 2,000 corner stores in Philadelphia and — like those elsewhere in the country — they often don’t carry healthier snacks and groceries, like fruits and dairy products. Owners point out that fresh foods need special handling, and they don’t know if customers will buy them.
A healthy profit
Brianna Almaguer Sandoval, project manager for the Healthy Corner Store Initiative, stresses that stores can turn a profit with healthier items. "With those packaged goods, the profit you’re making is a couple cents per item, but with produce, it tends to be higher."
The store owners receive $100 as a joining bonus, attractive baskets and stands to display their fresh produce, and refrigerators to store it in. The Food Trust works closely with store owners at first, introducing them to suppliers, showing them how to handle the food and providing materials to market it.
Sandoval explains that the Food Trust also provides a list of healthier items they could carry, including canned goods, whole grains, "...dairy products, lean cuts of meat, fresh produce, obviously. And then we go back in three or four months and see if they made those changes."
Without that help, Oliviarie’s Market owner Clara Santos says she would not have known how to begin selling fresh fruits and vegetables in her store. "I wouldn’t start it, I wouldn’t think about it, because I thought it was hard to introduce new things like that in a neighborhood where you don’t know if they’re going to buy it."
Exploring options
But the community has embraced the new access to healthier foods.
Theresea McClery appreciates the corner store convenience, because the closest supermarket, which carries fresh healthy foods, is not within walking distance. "I like the apples, the carrots. I buy the carrots and eat them with sour cream."
Santos says even the students are making healthy choices. "Some of them, in the morning, they eat an apple or yogurt."
Before the program started, Santos only sold a few bunches of bananas a week. She now stocks — and sells — a colorful spectrum of oranges, apples, plantains and sweet potatoes. Meanwhile, other cities have taken notice of Philadelphia’s success. Portland, Oregon; Birmingham, Alabama and New York City are all planning to launch programs closely modeled on the Healthy Corner Store Initiative.

Wal-Mart - Healthier Foods
Largest US Grocer Pledges Healthier Foods
Robert Raffaele - Washington - 20 January 2011 - VOA
First lady Michelle Obama and retail giant Wal-Mart have launched a program aimed at improving the nutritional content of America's foods, and making those items more affordable for millions of Americans. The initiative is part of the first lady's campaign to promote healthier choices for children in the United States.
Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, says it will reformulate thousands of food products to make them healthier. It plans to reduce salt and sugar in foods by 2015, lower prices on produce and promote healthier food items.
"At Wal-Mart we don't believe that any customer, in fact any American, should have to choose between doing what is realistic and affordable and doing what is healthier for her family," said Andrea Thomas, a senior vice president at Wal-Mart.
A number of food makers, including Kraft Foods and PepsiCo Inc., announced sodium reductions in their products last year.
As the nation's largest grocer, Wal-Mart has unique influence in changing the practices of its suppliers.
The initiative is part of first lady Michelle Obama's efforts to reduce childhood obesity in the U.S.
At a news conference in Washington Thursday, the president's wife called Wal-Mart's efforts "a huge victory" for all Americans.
"When kids are consuming these products every day, those reductions in sugar, and salts and trans-fat can really add up. When healthier options are finally affordable, that can affect every single meal a child eats, whether it's adding fruit at breakfast, or whole wheat bread at lunch, or some veggies on the plate at dinner," she said.
Mrs. Obama said the launch of the Wal-Mart campaign has the potential to transform the marketplace, citing the 140 million people who shop at the retailer each week.
"I don't just feel hopeful about what this one company is doing for our children's health. I feel hopeful about what we as a nation can do. And even more importantly, I feel hopeful about what we as individuals - what we as parents - can do. That's the point," she said.
Mrs. Obama once served on the board of a Wal-Mart vendor, but resigned in 2007. That decision came days after her husband, campaigning for the presidency, announced he would not shop at the store, because of the wages and benefits it provided to employees.

Italy Bans Plastic Shopping Bags
Italy to Ban Plastic Shopping Bags January 1
VOA News - Dec 30, 2010
Italy is banning the use of plastic shopping bags across the country starting January 1 and requiring shops and markets to switch to biodegradable bags.
Italian government is thought to be the first in the European Union to outlaw the use of the bags, although some European countries impose a levy on them.
Italians are among the bloc's top consumers of plastic bags using more than 300 per person annually. Italian Environment Minister Stefania Prestigiacomo said the ban is an important step against pollution and for recycling.
The government has promoted the use of cloth or paper bags and those made of recyclable materials. Some shoppers and retailers have complained that biodegradable bags, especially paper bags, are not safe because they break when they get wet.
Environmental groups have welcomed the ban, which will come into effect Saturday despite some opposition from retailers.
Italian manufacturers are working on producing shopping bags that can also be a fashion statement.
French and Belgian marine biologists warned Thursday that some 250 billion microscopic pieces of plastic bags are floating in the Mediterranean, creating a biological hazard.
The French news agency quoted scientist Francois Galgani of the French Institute for Exploration of the Sea as saying that the figure derives from samples of water taken off the French Italian and Spanish Mediterranean coasts.

2010 US Retail Sales Could Top $450 Billion
Mil Arcega | Washington - December 27, 2010
A winter snowstorm in parts of the United States appears to have put a damper on after-Christmas shopping, but preliminary reports suggest retailers are enjoying the best holiday season in years.
Blizzard warnings, icy driving conditions and forecasts of as much as 50 centimeters of snow along the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic coasts - kept some people away from shopping malls over the weekend.
"If there wasn't a blizzard today, I'd be shopping," says one woman.
But even with the late year snowstorms, the National Retail Federation says the 2010 holiday season is shaping up to be one of the best.

But even with the late year snowstorms, the National Retail Federation says the 2010 holiday season is shaping up to be one of the best.
Early numbers show U.S. consumers on track to spend over $450 billion by January 1.
That's three percent more than last year - the best increase since 2007.
Economist Kit Yarrow believes those estimates are on the low side.
"What they are doing is spending more like five percent more and that's in stores," Yarrow said. "Online, its more like 17 or 18 percent, so it's been a stronger holiday season than really anybody predicted."
Even casual shoppers say they probably spent more than they wanted to this year.
"I realize I did spend a little more," a woman said. "It seems like there's been more parties, more spending, more presents."
Retail analyst Lori Wachs says that's a sure sign the U.S. economy is starting to pick up.
"The consumer felt confident enough to step up their spending this holiday season," she said.
Even those with concerns about unemployment found themselves in a spending mood. Some shoppers say the bargains were simply too good to pass up.
Consumer spending is the biggest driver of the U.S. economy. And with holiday sales accounting for as much as 40 percent of revenue for some retailers, Kit Yarrow says strong sales in 2010 could mean a stronger recovery next year.
"When consumers are spending money, there's more jobs," said economist Kit Yarrow. "When unemployment numbers improve, people feel more confident. It's really a snowball so it's good for the economy, I think, to see people spending money."
Despite a good year for retailers, the snowstorms have been less kind to the nation's transportation sector.
Rail service along some of the busiest Northeast routes were suspended Sunday. And more than 1,400 flights have been cancelled in the New York City area, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
